The majestic Sierra de los Cuchumantanes mountain range provides a scenic backdrop to the more than 1200 family farms of the ASOBAGRI cooperative in Guatemala's Huehuetenango region. Steeped in history, the area is home to the indigenous Mam people, descendants of the ancient Maya, and hosts the Zaculeu ruins, an archaeological site dating to 250 AD.
The ASOBAGRI farmers grow their coffee beneath the shade of guava, plantain and banana trees which provide both environmental diversity and additional cash crops. The cooperative trains members in organic production methods and provides them essential infrastructure such as warehouses and drying patios.
